National Bank of Ukraine is transferring its systems to the next-generation platform SAP HANA

KIEV — SAP, one of the market leaders in enterprise application software, and National Bank of Ukraine (NBU), country’s primary bank, have announced the start of the project implementing a set of SAP solutions, which includes human resource management system SAP HCM based on an in-memory platform SAP HANA and the new version of the ERP system SAP S/4 HANA. Upgrade of the IT infrastructure will allow NBU to achieve important strategic goals: optimize resources and increase general efficiency of the enterprise’s operations.

National Bank of Ukraine is one of SAP’s oldest clients in the country. Back in 1997 the bank implemented a ERP system for a multi-faceted automation of the recording of the bank’s business operations. Since 2000 NBU has started to conduct its financial and business activities using a powerful integrated SAP system, which united its central office with numerous branches. Implementation of the IT system allowed NBU to switch from keeping business records in disparate on-premise systems to an integrated solution with a capability for end-to-end analysis, as well as to increase resource planning efficiency of the entire bank.

In 2009 a SAP-based system was created to manage investments, projects and real estate assets at NBU. Its goal was to increase transparency and decrease labor intensity of the processes connected with preparation, approval and execution of the investment programs. In 2010 NBU made a decision to automate banking processes and chose SAP Loans and Collateral Management to optimize the process of refinancing commercial banks.

Since 2014 the bank has been undergoing a large-scale organizational transformation in accordance with the enforced development strategy of the banking system. It is aimed at increasing the efficiency of decision making and government policy execution, more effective distribution of available resources, as well as optimization of expenses. The new structure is meant to meet NBU’s needs as a modern mobile regulator ready for new challenges of the rapidly changing market conditions.

Next stage of the transformation will last 2.5 years. NBU has already started to implement an HR-system based on SAP HCM in order to optimize its operations. This is an integrated solution for measuring employee efficiency and managing human resources. SAP HCM will be deployed on the next-generation in-memory platform SAP HANA, which allows for real-time business operations.

Another project that is currently being executed at NBU is the transfer of the ERP system to SAP HANA platform.

There are more than 20 IT systems that are currently functioning at the bank and the goal for the next couple of years is to gradually get rid of outdated software and move all key business functions to a modern platform. Further implementation of SAP solutions will allow to simplify business processes, lower total cost of ownership of the IT infrastructure and speed up business operations.

“National Bank of Ukraine is coordinating the work of the country’s entire banking system, that is why the bank is paying close attention to its internal reforms. We are planning to abandon the post-soviet model of an overstaffed regulatory authority with low productivity. And this is where SAP’s solutions help us increase efficiency and optimize business processes,” — commented Roman Borysenko, Deputy Governor at National Bank of Ukraine.

“SAP and National Bank of Ukraine joint project is strategic and momentous for the country. In modern world, the ability to react quickly and thoughtfully and to control all HR processes is a key to success for any bank. With modern technologies and innovations integration, National Bank of Ukraine consistently implements growth strategy and shows increase in work efficiency. We are sure that processes optimization in such a fundamental structure as National Bank will promote further strengthening of Ukraine economics” – said Maxim Matyash, Managing Director at SAP Ukraine and Georgia.

“SAP solutions for the banking sector are a de facto global standard: they are used by more than 14 000 banks in 150 countries. Innovative technology that provides the basis for SAP products helps transform business processes according to the demands of digital economy. NBU will use SAP systems along with such global leaders as Deutsche Bank, CommonwealthBank, UniCredit Group, Bank of America, Barclays. We are confident that our partnership with National Bank of Ukraine will allow this organization to achieve its goals and effectively organize operations in today’s digital world,” — noted Alexander Arnold, General Manager Industries Middle & Eastern Europe at SAP SE.
