Apps developed by Youth from Mexico and Venezuela win competition sponsored by SAP and Junior Achievement

The apps RedCo and Ecoins were selected among the best projects from twelve countries in the region, as part of the initiative Latin Code Week.

SAP and Junior Achievement (JA) Americas announced that the project developed by a team of young people in Venezuela was selected by the regional jury as the winner of the 2020 edition of Latin Code Week. Additionally, a project from Mexico won the Mention of the Audience, by obtaining the highest number of votes in the platform https://latincodeweek.org/votacion/.

Latin Code Week’s mission is to train young people from Latin American in technology tools and social-emotional skills, as well as to encourage them to study careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Through this initiative, young people from twelve countries in the region create innovative solutions with a social impact, based on the development of a sustainable business model.

The challenge this year was to use technology to develop prototypes of solutions that mitigate climate change and foster the positive impact of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) associated with this area of focus.

RedCo, the app developed by the Mexico team, helps people and businesses in the food sector prevent economic losses by selling low-cost food in good condition and avoid organic waste that today goes to the trash and generates carbon dioxide emissions that harm the planet.

Ecoins, the project developed by the Venezuela team, seeks to motivate young people to recycle, providing them with an incentive, and inviting them to continue learning about the culture of recycling.

This year, the program is celebrating its fifth year of impact in the region. Since its inception, it has reached more than 6,000 students from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, the United States, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico and Venezuela, with the support of more than 400 SAP mentors who participate in virtual workshops that foster innovation with a purpose. The program also has the support of American Tower, which supports the finalist teams with mentoring in the final stage of the program.
